Happy belated birthday to your mom! I hope she had a fabulous Birthday.

    • From jupiterj on mom's ninetieth and wimpy jupe

I think she liked having a little fuss made over her. I am passing on all the Facebooger “Happy Birthdays!” and will tell her you said “happy birthday” as well.

Personally thoughts.. I believe the media has played a large part by reporting on the extreme on each side, making it appear that we are “for” or “against” all of one side or the other. Perhaps it’s more likely we are all somewhat in the middle with leanings one way or the other. Seems reasonable that we all have more in common than we’d like to admit.

I disliked some policies of the current administration and no doubt will dislike some of the upcoming administration. The bigger picture – to me – is that we are lucky to live in a fabulous country that allows us to agree to disagree.

The personal attacks on “friends”, one saying to another “you’re stupid for voting for…” , “you’re an asshole if you think…” , etc.. Is where I’ve had the most difficult time absorbing it all. From the expected cast of characters to the completely unexpected folks that I had no idea would go to that length.

We really do live in a wonderful country and have benefits far beyond so many. Perhaps we will all take a collective sigh this Thanksgiving and appreciate what we have and focus less on us against them. A girl can dream..

    End rant.

I’m fascinated by how people get their info these days. Ed Friedman, the family systems therapist who has had a big influence on my thinking, used to say that the media is an amplifier, it amplifies anxiety and bad vibes or even good ones but in his opinion did not originate them. He died last century. I have often wondered what he would think of what was happening now.

  • From Leigh Jenkins on stalling, practicing, playing, surrounded

Steve, my family had the Portsmouth Sinfonia album – my mother used to get such a kick out of it! She was also a big fan of PDQ Bach. Thanks for the memories!

    • From jupiterj on stalling, practicing, playing, surrounded

Very cool. I admit that at first hearing I didn’t quite understand what was happening. Of course I was on YouTube and attributed some of the bad sound to maybe a bad recording at first. But eventually I got it.

  • From Sarah on 4 harpsichords

I’ve always really liked that piece. 🙂 x

    • From jupiterj on 4 harpsichords

      You and me both baby

  • From Rhonda Edgington on ezra pound, homer, and hugo distler

Good music notes! I think you give people a helpful sense of who Distler was, what he was trying to do with his music, and how it fit into the musical and political climate of his day. Love that piece!

    • From jupiterj on ezra pound, homer, and hugo distler

Thank you for reading and commenting! I’m glad you think the bulletin note works. I was wondering if you were still reading this silly blog. I’m guessing you’re pretty busy these days.

  • From David Lee on 2 experiences

    Hello Stephen,

I just wanted to say thanks again for letting me play alongside you during the retirement party last Thursday. Its been a loooong time (if you couldn’t tell) since I’ve played in that capacity. Your musicianship is breathtaking! Thanks for helping to make the evening a bit more memorable.

    Be well,

    David Lee (the viola guy)

  • From jupiterj on 2 experiences

    David,

dude, you are too kind. I had fun but I wish we could have heard each other a bit better.

    Steve

    • From jupiterj on 2 experiences

Nice playing yourself, by the way!

  • From Sarah on confessions of a nerd

    Not checking the blog? Psh.

We can always Skype too, you know… and you can chat to our present selves! 😀

    • From jupiterj on confessions of a nerd

I know you check the blog, but I also know that sometimes you wait and read several at a time. Anyway, thanks for reading and commenting! love from Dad

  • From Elizabeth on confessions of a nerd

Hey! You don’t call. You don’t write. Of course I read your blog.

    • From jupiterj on confessions of a nerd

Everyday? Well my hits fell way down and I know somebody (or some bot) is not reading these days. At any rate, I’m glad you’re having time in England. Thank you for reading and commenting. love from Dad

      • From Elizabeth on confessions of a nerd

I love you! Usually daily if I’m home. But with a VPN so I’m not sure how that registers with google analytics. On the road definitely not every day.

  • From Cindy Cosway on sheepish jupe

I think most of us have these frustrated moments, then regret later. This too shall pass. 🙂

    • From jupiterj on sheepish jupe

That is kind of you to say! Thanks!

  • From Cindy Cosway on confessions of a nerd

“I have been thinking about my blogging as letters to people in the past. People who are not now who they were then. These are letters to their former selves. I think about this when I know my kids are busy and probably not checking the blog very much.”

I find this fascinating. In two parts. Part 1: I’m not sure I would spend much time writing letters to folks that aren’t who they once were – and maybe/probably weren’t all I thought they were from the start. I admire that you do and it must bring you some peace. I often think I’m missing some genetic code of emotion, but not sure which one.

I love the people that are currently in my life, and I spend very little time thinking about those that are no longer in my life. (until I read your blog, anyway – Ha!)

    Hopefully I’ve not over-shared.

Part 2: I believe your kids are never so busy that they don’t check your blog much. Smiley face.

  • From jupiterj on confessions of a nerd

Loving people currently in your life is an admirable thing! I do that, too! And Elizabeth and Sarah both responded saying they read the blog regularly.

I’m not seeking peace with people in my past. I just wondered if they were my idealized audience as I blather on here. But who knows?

Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

Hope you’re having a good holiday!

    love from Uncle Steve

  • From Sarah on tools for coping

Yes, i recommended hypernormalisation – I thought you started it but didn’t finish it, and I think you said it was oversimplifying things.. I found it useful for a bit of context, but it does simplify – it sorta creates a dot-to-dot connecting events to get to where we are now, skipping over a lot I’m sure

As Elizabeth put on Facebook, ‘were all in this togetger!’
    X x

    • From jupiterj on tools for coping

We watched Hypernormalisatoin a bit again last night, but the YouTube version was blurry. Instead we turned to the new Netflix version of Lemony Snicket and quite enjoyed the first episode.

  • From Mark on tools for coping

I thought this was an especially helpful episode. Listened to it while lying in bed and then again while driving to and from Ann Arbor this afternoon. Thanks for your notes.

    • From jupiterj on tools for coping

Yes, I was especially glad to hear what Lakoff has to say. I convinced Eileen to listen to it as well and then she recommended it to some of her alto friends at the Grace Choir Alto breakfast yesterday. Thanks for the Solnit book. I am now keeping a doc of “possible reads” to try to track books that interest me better.

  • From Elizabeth on tools for coping

So many good links and recs here. Thanks! Listening to On the Media now. Love you!

    • From jupiterj on tools for coping

Glad you found it helpful. Love from Dad!

  • From Elizabeth on some book talk

I’m supremely disturbed by your continued use of the term “Basefuck.” Ok, now I’ll read the rest of your post.

    • From jupiterj on some book talk

Oh dear. Sorry about that. I try to use a different version every time. Didn’t know I was repeating that one. Thanks for reading.

  • From Elizabeth on jupe composes himself

Wow, that’s so excellent! And how amazing to have something emerge from a dream.

    • From jupiterj on jupe composes himself

It didn’t exactly emerge in a dream, I simply woke up thinking about it and hearing it. But it still was very unusual for me.

      • From Elizabeth on jupe composes himself

Brains are cool. *Your* brain is cool.

  • From Elizabeth on mostly links

I’ve listened to one of those episodes on poverty. I found it really brutal! I’m not sure I’ll listen to the rest of them just now. Man.

    • From jupiterj on mostly links

I understand. Eileen and I are working are way through them. I’m re-listening to Episode 2 and have made it all the way through 3. Brutal they are, but I’m finding them a helpful counterbalance to the influx of information and news just now.

  • From jupiterj on jupe composes himself

Brains ARE cool that ‘s for sure . And mysterious.

  • From Mark on no success like failure, failure's no success at all

So I’m a bit of a reactionary but I would remember Huw’s treatment of you when it comes to scheduling guest organists for recitals. Invite Rhonda. Invite Craig. Invite Nora Duncan. Invite your friend who just moved to an episcopal gig. I would wait for a year before even considering to invite that 1928 BCP, hoary old Anglican idiot. But that’s just me.

    • From jupiterj on no success like failure, failure's no success at all

I appreciate your reaction. Jen also was upset about this. Locally I have run into quite a bit of lack of vision about supporting the arts outside of Hope College and feel like I want to do my part to connect and support musicians, even Hew when he’s being a bit of a stinker. Jen has a very cool idea about inviting all of the organists involved in the project to play on a dedicatory recital. That would be Rhonda, Craig, myself, and Hew. When she told me this idea about a year ago, I said we should definitely invite this crew, but that it might not happen. Despite Hew’s response, I plan to invite him and his students to come and observe as Pasi installs the instrument. Then I am more interested in involving Hope organ students at Grace than Hew. My guess is he wouldn’t play anyway.
